Hello 2025!

If you have a blog, you’re contractually obligated to write a yearly roundup. I have a yearly practice (that I’ve taken from my friend Jessica Cole) to look back over the last year, and make goals for what I’d like to see in the new year. (here) is an example worksheet that I’ve used in the past!

This year, which feels right, I’m a little late getting this up.

2024 Recap

here are some of the things from 2024.

Professionally

Left my job at Fastly, two years after they acquired Glitch. Had frustrations with the perceived slowness of the organization, and getting resources during the tech crunch of 2024 was feeling harder and harder. Ultimately, working at an organization of that size or larger without direct control over the product and vision wasn’t a good fit for me, but I’m so glad I had the opportunity to work with some of the most brilliant people in the industry. I’m cheering for all of my ex Glitch and Fastly coworkers, and really need to dip my toe into experimenting with the Fastly Compute platform now that they’ve launched their free tier 😉

It’s January, and like a lot of other folks who either got laid off or left their roles last year, I’m going to start looking! Take a look at my hire me page, and my resume. If you’ve got any roles that seem like a fit (I’m also open to consulting!) send me an email.

Movies & TV

Music

Joined record.club, and pushed myself to start listening to new music again. Here are some of my favorites from the year:

Games

Good year for games! I completed the new Dragon Age after waiting ten years, and found it a delightful experience. I enjoyed the characters, even if some of it was a little heavy handed (Tash’s trans storyline) but I appreciated that the storylines were there at all, especially with the political climate we’re heading into 2025 with.

XOXO 🥲

I attended my first, and the last XOXO Festival. It was a blast, but mostly it reminded me that I exist in a community and want to see my internet friends more often. Getting to hang out with my Glitch pals, and meet some people in the industry that I’ve been wanting to for ages. I saw all of the talks, but this one by Ed Yong has stuck with me the longest post-XOXO. It also encouraged me to get out there and start taking pictures of birds. I love birds.

It also reminded me of my love of the…

Internet

Weird year for the internet.

  • Quit twitter (posts here). Was reminded how great of a product the twitter exporter is (if it works). Creates a simple .html file, that has searching capacibilites over all of your posts.

Subeta

When I have a break between jobs, I usually fall back to my old habits - working on Subeta. At this point this is a labor of love, I don’t make anything financially from it. We’ve still got a team of ~10 dedicated folks who are keeping the site safe and launching small content, but for the most part when I’m not around it’s in hibernation as far as new features go.
