2025

Year in Review

This was a year of transitions. I started at Handshake early in the year, but left after a few months when it became clear it wasn't the right fit. Meanwhile, I watched Glitch wind down and eventually shut its doors—the end of an era for a place that meant so much to me and to the open web.

I went on my first cruise! I enjoyed it so much we're going on it again this year. I bought a very expensive camera, and have taken not nearly enough photos with it. 2026 goals!

We did a full home rennovation! It took 14 months! I think I'm the only person I know who enjoyed the process.

I tried to build more micro sites like this one for my birthday and have fun with the internet.

The second half of the year brought something unexpected: I joined Propel's AI residency, working on tools for people navigating the social safety net. It's been deeply fulfilling work, and I'm learning a lot about AI in the process. I've been thinking about how to write and share more, even though it's a touchy subject.

Year in Selfies

I take a lot of selfies. Here are just a few.

2026 Goals

  • Write more blog posts

I've done this more in 2025! I want to keep up with it. I should just naturally reach for writing a blog post, even for small things!

  • Go to more in person things

I had this goal for 2025 as well, and didn't do great. I need to say yes to more things.

  • Volunteer more

I stepped down from my board position at One Found Sound at the end of this year, and need to find more volunteering opportunities in 2026.

  • Take more photos with my actual camera

I should just do it more often!

  • Build more with ATProto

Even though I managed to delete my account, I want to build more 😭

  • Pick up a physical skill

I tried needlepoint in 2025, and just stabbed my finger over and over. I should pick up the microkorg...

Building Tools for the Safety Net: My Year in Propel's AI Residency

After discovering I'm definitely not a "growth team" person and watching Glitch wind down, I'm back in civic tech where I belong – this time in an AI Residency at Propel. We're building tools to help states and SNAP beneficiaries navigate HR1's massive changes, including new penalties that charge states more money for higher error rates. During the recent shutdown, I built crawlers to get real-time benefit updates to folks and created the most comprehensive database of active food pantries using AI tools. It's not the sexy AI that gets TED talks – it's the kind that keeps benefits from being wrongly terminated because we finally taught a system that gig work counts as employment.

Three Months at Handshake!

After three months at Handshake, I learned that sometimes the most valuable career experiences are the ones that clarify what you don't want. Despite making great friends and working with talented early career engineers, I discovered that being on a growth team wasn't for me – I'm a thoughtful, document-everything kind of engineer, not a move-fast type. With the mismatch in work styles it became clear this wasn't the right fit. This post reflects on what worked, what didn't, and the lessons I'm taking forward about vetting opportunities and knowing your own work style.
