based on colson whitehead’s pulitzer-winning novel. follows two black kids, elwood and turner, growing up in florida. the movie shifts first-person perspective between them, which feels ambitious but really works. you’re thrown right into it and everything feels immersive.

the real MVP is aunjanue ellis-taylor as hattie, elwood’s grandmother. she radiates warmth, love, and worry in every scene. like, you feel her.

caught it at the new parkway in oakland (top-tier theater!!! couches!). wild experience because they had the super bowl playing next door. imagine: everyone deep in this intense, gut-wrenching moment—on the edge of literal couches, holding our breath—and suddenly: GOOOOO BIRDS muffled through the wall. 😭
